In 1986 Ove Joensen decided to row 900 nautical miles (1,700 km) across the North Sea from Faroe Islands to Denmark. He arrived in Copenhagen on 11 August 1986 after 41 days rowing alone. His persistence made him a national hero. Ove Joensen was born in the capital Tórshavn, year 1948. He moved to the islands Nólsoy where he grew up, which has one shop, two bars, 213 people, and no cars. The North Atlantic Ocean was always a great part of his life, and it also took his life in 24 November 1987.
